University of Tasmania 2025
My university has an excellent overseas medical elective program at the end of my fourth year. I have spoken to many people who’ve undertaken electives with Work the World, and they all had an amazing time. I want to have that same experience.
My placement at the hospital in Hue was very different from that in Australia. It was always busy and had an incredible atmosphere, unlike anything I had experienced.
Despite the busy atmosphere, everyone had so much time for me as a student, making me feel like part of the team.
The placement allowed me to continue to practice my skills while receiving advice and guidance from skilled clinicians with different training.
Being a part of my first CPR scenario was memorable and enlightening. The hospital team included me as if I were part of it, making it very real. It was an incredible learning opportunity.
There were some key differences between the local healthcare system and the healthcare system back home in Australia. Very few things in Vietnam were single-use. Most things that could be washed and reused were!
I also noted how family members of patients were always present within the hospital. Everyone was incredibly polite, even in times of crisis.
Primary health was very limited in Vietnam, so many cases had a first presentation at the later stages of the disease.
During the evenings after placement, my housemates and I would explore the lively streets of Hue and often visited a nearby tailor shop to purchase tailored clothes to take home.
During the weekend, we visited Bach Ma National Park and the hot springs, which were absolutely beautiful!
There were so many benefits to undertaking my placement overseas. Not only did I get an incredible insight into Vietnamese culture, but I also gained an in-depth understanding of the differences in healthcare.
It was also the chance to meet many amazing people, travel, and experience new things.
I’d encourage you to go overseas for your placement if you’re thinking about doing it! It’s an experience you shouldn’t miss. Enjoy every minute because time goes so fast.
